Wow! A big thanks to all of the board members, parents and coaches that organized their players for photo day!

They made sure the players arrived to their time slot on time, ushered them into their spot and, in case of the littles, got them on and off the ice safely.

This is a beautiful spot in the studio to take a break from my computer and enjoy the last sight of green on the trees before Autumn takes over and we have to say goodbye to summer.

Usually I look forward to fall and crave the cooler air and colours but this year it's taking a little bit longer to accept that summer will soon be over.

I must whip myself up some pumpkin coffee creamer which will no doubt help spark the hygge fall feeling.

The town of Legal has planned their Soccer Photo Night

We missed some of the U9s today

A lot of the U9s were not able to make it to photo day so we weren't able to get a team photo but that's okay because those who missed today can come to the next photo day on Wednesday 3 May, and as an extra special alternative to the Memory Mate, we can design you a Roster Mate.

Like the Memory Mate, your individual player still gets the hero image, and their team members are presented on this 8x10 size with them.

As a bonus the team members' names are listed along with their jersey numbers.

This is the option for when not all team members were able to make it to photo night but you still want to remember these faces for years to come.

This Roster Mate has been added to The Rock's online ordering options.

* This Roster Mate can be customized to fit up to 12 players. If you have more players we will need to size up the print from an 8x10.

There were a whole lot of giggly girls at the shoot last night. Good thing they were being skilfully organized by their enthusiastic coaches. If anyone needs help herding cats, I’ve got some people I can recommend.

Digital Images for Sports Photography

When you order a digital image from your sports photo shoot I will email you a link to download your image. You choose if you want a LOW resolution or HIGH resolution image.

The differences:

Low resolution images are sized for social. They are smaller so you can conveniently share them by email and on social media. They will not be large enough to print copies.
High resolution images are sized to print. They are full resolution high quality images which is required if you want to print your photo.

You will receive a digital license detailing the uses of whichever one you choose.

If you want to make prints and share on social the high resolution choice is for you.

Some of my clients already have a print-worthy portrait before we get going. Cole is in Can West's AAA Thunder Hockey Club and was here for a hockey photo shoot - his test shot was taken before he got his gear on.

Five end of season coach gifts

Without coaches and volunteers growing up with team sports wouldn't be possible. Give me a loud "HECK YEAH!" if team sports made up a big part of you growing up. Is it the end of your league's season and you want to be sure your coach knows how much you appreciate them volunteering their early mornings, late evenings and weekend hours to your team and league? Here's a list of 5 coach presents to gift to your coach at the end of your sports season...

Mugs.

I'd bet your coach was going through the brew to stay caffeinated and alert all the while they were coaching your team. Thank them with a mug that will remind them of the team they gave their time to guide you through another season.

Signing Boards.

Volunteering their early mornings, late evenings and weekend hours to your team. Say "thank you" and write a little message on this framed signing board to present to your coach. There will be no doubt they remember the faces that go along with the notes.

Trader Cards.

Does your coach collect trader cards? Give your coach a holder they can slip into their binder with all of the trader cards for the team.

Magazine Covers.

On photo day have your coach pose for their photo too - have their image put onto a magazine cover and customize the headings to suit them.

Do you remember playing ball when you were a kid? The support of your family, getting to spend time with your friends and the encouragement from your coach 😊 It was a WINDY day at the photo shoot so Aunties and coaches jumped in as "hair and makeup" to ensure the players looked their best for their annual photo. Mind you, a bit of wind in the hair adds a little action to the shot so it's a win-win.

It's summer and we are reopened! Team sports can begin and along with practices and games, baseball photo shoots are now underway. This is an ideal time to mention a few tips for getting ready for your baseball or softball photo shoot.

If you're wearing a hat, have it match your team colours.
Bring your favourite bat
Don't forget your glove
If you have special shoes, bring them
Clean and pack your uniform
Put the items you want to bring by the door so you won't forget them

A little preparation will ensure you are looking the part for your photo shoot and the mementoes will be that much more awesome.

This little sport star loved being in front of the camera and was excited to tell all his friends that he had a professional hockey photo shoot. When I say "Look at mom." I will almost always get a smile. I can tell you from experience that regardless of age (yes, even teenagers) this is true. They can't help but smile when they look at mom and it melts mom's hearts in and out of the studio.

It's Spring! Here at the cottage I've been spending a lot of time with dirt; digging it, sorting it, planting seeds with it, breathing it in (boy it's dry) and talking about it because this year may be the year we actually do some landscaping! We've got 160 acres of beautiful natural landscape but no purposeful landscaping has yet taken place. Slowly, slowly, is the pace we're taking here and I'm okay with that. Happiness is when they look this cute for their test shot😆 When you come for studio shoots we get the light just right before we start shooting and that's why we take test shots. Some models have fun with it and they already have a print-worthy portrait before they get their outfit(s) on. In this case he was here for a hockey photo shoot and this was before he got his gear on. Nothing beats a relaxed model with a natural smile.

Coffee & Bourbon

It's happy hour at the cottage. Leftover coffee doesn't usually exist at the cottage but it's Spring which meant my day was full of outdoor chores so the second cup of coffee in my French Press was left to be enjoyed in the evening. An extra bonus is that I could use a little pick-me-up after schlepping wood and digging in the garden all day. Sometimes the stars align.

Never let the morning's brew go to be waste...

INGREDIENTS

4 1/2 oz black iced coffee

1 oz bourbon

1/4 to 1/2 oz maple syrup (how sweet do you like it?)

DIRECTIONS

If you don't have leftover coffee brew a pot and let it chill until cold, or dilute your cold-brew concentrate with an equal amount of cold water. Measure all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake thoroughly, until chilled and foamy. Strain into a glass over ice.

Way to go mom!! You got on the list and your free hockey shoot is booked. You're going to get your hockey mementos so you can remember the strangest hockey season in images.

Bring your gear including your skates and hockey stick.
You wont be able to wear your skates in studio but see the images below to see what kind of images we can get.
We will follow the Government's rules so wear your mask. You can take the mask off while shooting, but I'll be wearing mine.
Also in line with the Government's rules, we need to keep the number of people in the studio limited. Please come to the studio with only the athletes that will be taking part in a photo shoot.
Bring your order form to the studio on the day of your shoot - print it here. All of the classic sports stuff like trader cards etc is available and there are also some special items available only with these studio photo shoots.
Your shoot will last around 20 minutes.
You will have various photos to choose from.

It's clean up your computer day - print your images

Your computer just crashed and you lost all your photos! You spent hundreds trying to recover any data from your hard drive without success. The thought of this makes my heart race - ugh my worst nightmare! Today is Clean Out Your Computer Day so the perfect time for me to send you this message encouraging you to print your images.

Regardless of how hard Google, iCloud, Dropbox, etc. work to create a failsafe system, the reality is that no system is ever 100% safe. While we love the idea of security and permanent preservation that digital files seem to offer, the reality is any platform can crash go out of business, or hike their prices up. Print your images because there's no way to reclaim them once they're lost.

Late Autumn Neutral Colours

Autumn is a very popular time for photo shoots. Is it because people are preparing for their Christmas cards or that the colours are gorgeous? Maybe a bit of both, but there is that time between beautiful orange and yellow foliage and wonderfully covered white landscapes that can be special. The leaves have all fallen, the air is fresh and aromatic and the landscape is neutral - possibly a bit minimalistic. This boy rocked his photoshoot and had fun doing it. He told his mom he really enjoyed it and his mom knows he liked being 'in the spotlight' at his one-on-one photo session.

Inventory time of year

country life in Alberta, Canada I was organizing the cold room and, although I wasn't expecting it, the chore filled me full of anticipation for colder weather. There must be something primal about filling the cold room with the year's harvest that connects me to the natural instinct for preparing to hunker down for winter. It's getting darker sooner, the mornings are noticeably colder and I've got the urge to collect wood. Autumn is coming and the yellow bits in the trees make that easy to realize. I was doing a final edit on this image and after I zoomed in to check the details I saw myself in these beautiful green eyes.

Look closely and here I am behind the scenes on a hot day summer here at Elbow Tree Cottage photographing individual portraits. It's a great time of year for light filled summer images. I took this lovely teenager to three different locations and we played with different accessories each time. I love taking pictures for this family every year - it's so fun seeing the girls grow into young adults.

Memory Lane - that's the name of this area here at Elbow Tree Cottage. It's beautiful and I knew when we were first looking at the land that this was going to be a great location for photographs. I've used Memory Lane for family photography and individuals too.

I help my clients with what to wear and my client's mom loves how her daughter looks in 'jewel tones'. In this shoot she is wearing something from the studio. I love how the dark dress contrasts with the model's skin and trees.

The difference two years make

I've been photographing the same league for three years and each year it's so entertaining to see the change in the players ⚾️ I expect this is less entertaining for the parents as their babies grow into young adults. You're at home and you're probably getting tired of it. Tired of being cooped up and of not having any alone time. Don't let that stop you from capturing this time of your family's story in photographs. I've never regretted taking too many pictures - only not enough. As much as it's a challenging time, the images you capture will spark the memory of your children years from now and the stories they will recall with be ones of togetherness. I am SO looking forward to hearing the stories told by the younger generation in 10 years from now when we ask them to tell a story about this time in our history.

I don't think we tell each other enough stories and, in my circles, I hope to take steps to fix that. Bonfire story time here we come!

Seven tips to prepare your family for a photo shoot

There are 7 things I tell parents when preparing for their family photo shoot. These tips help prepare you and your family so the getting ready, showing up and having fun is stress free.

The first thing I say to moms who are planning a family photo shoot is ... INCLUDE EVERYONE: Get your family excited about the shoot. Involve them in the discussion of what you will be doing and where you will be doing it. Kids and adults alike want to know what's coming. Let them know they will be featured on the walls like the rock stars you know they are and they will no doubt perform accordingly 👍

PREPARE: The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your family will be so plan your outfits at least one-week in advance and set them aside so you are not fussing with stains on the day of your shoot. If your time before the shoot is rushed and stressful, this mood will be hard to break. Set the tone and be ready with spare time to relax or play with your children before the Session. ✨

EAT: Full tummies (or at least not hungry tummies) make for happy kids. Children are more likely to be restless and easily upset when they are hungry. Please bring snacks and drinks to keep them going and remember to avoid anything that will stain their face or get stuck in their teeth.

COMFORT: It's okay if your child wants to bring their favourite toy, blanket or anything that brings them comfort. They can take a break for a snuggle or maybe blankie should be in the picture too? Did you have a blankie when you were a child? Or was it something else?

ENJOY: I don't recommend making appointments immediately after your shoot. You have set this time aside for you all to be together – embrace it and be in the moment.

YOU CAN’T FAIL: There is no right or wrong way to do this. Love your family, hug them, throw your children into the air, tickle each other, enjoy a favourite activity and I will capture the interactions between your family.

NO PRESSURE: There is no hard and fast time limit for your session duration so don't worry if it takes time for your children to warm up.

A curious dog, a very long skirt and extremely deep snow! Here's a picture of behind the scenes before getting this very noble look from both models. A winter princess with her protective sidekick but there was plenty of silliness going on before pulling this off.

Her mother and I had fun pulling together this inspired outfit of textures and layers and doesn't this German Shepherd look like such a good boy! He looks as if his eyes are saying "Stay away from my little girl!"

I really don't know how the human brain works but I woke up this morning with memories flooding to the surface. Clearly more time has passed than I realized and these memories were from longer ago than it seems.

It feels like I was there, smelling that air and seeing those things for the first time just a couple years ago but time has moved faster than I can comprehend. So I sat down to look at old pictures; the images brought back moments I would have forgotten and I was thankful for having them.

One regret: LOTS of pictures but very difficult to find one me. I don't like being in pictures - I love to take them. I aim to be better at that because as self conscious as I may be, the memories mean more.

There is one picture below that I remember reluctantly letting someone take and now I am so glad to have it.

We let the dogs in and I’ll make pancakes, a breakfast casserole or egg sandwiches with freshly baked bread. The coffee is fresh and then we'll enjoy and veg before going for a walk in the woods with the dogs. Doing this sets a slow pace for our Saturday. It's harvest time!

I was so excited to see the farmer arrive today with his equipment and I can't say why. The oat field is beautiful and he's taking it all down - this means no more photographing clients amongst the golden stalks but still I was filled giddy energy. Back in the day harvest time was followed by harvest festivals where people celebrated with eating, contests, music and other fun activities. Could it be that I'm influenced by my farming ancestors? Or perhaps I'm looking forward to extending our daily walks into the newly accessible field? As it turns out the field actually still looks beautiful and golden. Tonight's walk is going to include a new route.

My old apron

I grabbed my old apron today and started making meatballs. As I used my hands to mix the ingredients I looked outside and my mind wandered... The season is changing and stores are full of autumn décor; you’re probably tempted to buy a new fall inspired apron. Is the apron you currently have your mother’s or maybe your grandmother’s, which was passed down to you? Do you have memories of coming in from playing outside with a bruised knee and her wiping your tears with it? Maybe you hid behind it when company came or she wore it to make your favourite pie? Was it worn to bring you soup when you were sick? Every mended hole and tear tells a story. Don’t buy a new apron, go to the basement or attic and dig out an old apron and wear it like a hug. You’ll be reminded of past moments while you make new ones.

Dancing to the music in your head

I had a super cute photo shoot with a 3-year old yesterday and we didn't know she was a dancer until she was in front of the camera. How children are going to react to being in front of the camera is an unknown and this little girl didn't stop moving. We're not sure why she chose to move the way she did but there was no stopping her. Her bottom could be solidly sat on a chair but her hands, and even her head, didn't stop dancing. When the music in her head became so good, she had to get up and strut her stuff. Her mom and I couldn't stop laughing at her moves and that only made her more confident in her self. Is it hard to imagine how your little one would react to the camera? In my experience they usually surprise you.

The last day of summer is approaching and I'm unapologetically looking forward to cozy sweaters, pulling my boots out of the back of the closet and stacking wood for chilly evenings. Summer was fun, it was nice not to have to wear three layers of clothing before heading out, it was amazing to have super long days that extended sundowner sessions and, if I’m honest, my legs needed to get a peek of sun! For those of you wanting to stop summer call me to talk about scheduling your summer session. Hey Moms, organizing a photo shoot can sound confusing - but it doesn't have to be

To some, thinking about organizing a photo shoot can be confusing – how do I herd the cats? That’s why I’m here to give you 7 quick tips on preparing your family. The first three are below, click the image above for the full seven.

TIP 1: EAT Full tummies make for happy kids. Children are more likely to be restless and easily upset when they’re hungry. Bring snacks and drinks to keep them going and remember to avoid anything that will stain their face or get stuck in their teeth.

TIP 2: COMFORT It’s okay if your child wants to bring their favourite toy, blanket or anything else that brings them comfort. They can take a break for a snuggle or maybe blankie should be in the picture too – don’t we all have fond memories of our favourite blanket or stuffy!

TIP 3: YOU CAN’T FAIL There is no right or wrong way to do this. Love your family, hug them throw your children in the air, tickle each other, enjoy a favourite activity and I will capture your family’s interactions.

One of my favourite things to do with my nieces and nephews is making ice-cream. It's probably one of their favourite too

They each have their favourite flavour and without fail they ask for it whenever they're visiting. It fills me with joy when they say "Auntie ..." and I love being able to give them something they want. For me, it makes it so much sweeter (no pun intended) when it's homemade and we can do it together.

Road Trippin' with someone special

What are you doing today? Today I get to take an 8-9 hour road trip with my sister. There was no chance I would give up the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with someone so special. Things I’ve packed for the trip are: my road trip playlist, very large coffee mug that can be refilled at any Tim Horton’s along the way (trying to be green) and a camera to record the funny moments that will eventually turn into memories and stories we will later tell. This afternoon I'm busy packing up memories of team comradery, sportsmanship, goals reached and lessons learned.

At first it's a momento to mark a fun event in their childhood years, you're proud and you share with your family. As time goes on it's a reminder of how they looked and of a time that seems too long ago. Start collecting these sports momentos for your children to enjoy when they're older. Your children will thank you when they sit down and reminisce about their younger years; old friends, teammates, coaches and what being part of a sports team taught them. Your grandchildren will also enjoy seeing their parents at their own age. It's never too early to start your child's legacy.

Club Volleyball Photo Shoots are Underway

Club Volleyball photo shoots are underway. Sports was a big part of growing up for me - grade school basketball, volleyball, badminton, skipping etc, although tennis was something I couldn't get a handle on. It probably wasn't a good idea to take tennis right after badminton due to the similarity of the racket but the big difference in swing!! Ouch, my wrist!

This is Phaedra's first year taking part in Club Volleyball with Volleyball Alberta. She and her U14 team are very much looking forward to the upcoming premier in Calgary and especially excited to be able to travel to British Columbia for Nationals.

What to wear

To some, thinking about organizing a photo shoot can be daunting – what would you wear? Below are 3 quick tips on what to wear and you can click the image below to get the full guide.

TIP 1: Avoid clothes with large logos, words or illustrations. Typically polka dots and wide stripes should also be avoided.

TIP 2: It’s best to avoid all-black and wearing too much white.

TIP 3: Iron clothes and use a lint roller. Wrinkles, lint, and animal hair will standout in photographs.

Wearing coordinating (not matching) clothes is nice but what’s most important is that you take a moment to stop time so you can cherish today in images that will make you smile for the rest of your life, and then the smiles keep coming because they will be how you’ll be remembered.

School Supply Season IS Photo Shoot Season

It's August and the summer is coming to an end. School shopping, hair cuts, and the smell of school supplies is in the air. Oh how I loved the smell of new school supplies! I very clearly remember shopping for and organising my school supplies. Ticking off items on the paper list provided by the school and choosing binder colours that matched the classes - Math was always blue. I digress.

I had a great time photographing this family who chose August for their annual photo shoot. I was able to spend individual time with each boy and even captured some special moments with only the parents. We had great weather and having their images from this shoot meant they didn't need to depend on school photos working out, the images could be more personal and include pets and their home/land as a backdrop. Additionally, they had plenty of time to order photo products for Christmas gifts and were able to take advantage of the October pre-order Christmas card sale. As I write this I am beginning to realise why August is such a busy time for photo shoot bookings.

Horse control, wardrobe fixing and encouragement.

Our model may not admit she wanted mom at her shoot but there is something comforting about having your mom nearby. I had a fantastic time at this shoot with Morgan and her mom. Morgan was confident, relaxed and silly in front of the camera and neither was fazed by the rainstorm that had us running for the barn.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Busby Minor Ball photo shoot. The mosquitoes were terrible and the athletes were all able to hold their best baseball pose even though they were being devoured by these blood thirsty insects.

Today I'm in St. Albert and there are lots of perks to organising a shoot here; parking, overcrowding can be avoided, access is easy and this little city takes nature seriously. Blinkity Blink Blink

They say women blink twice as often than men and, in this little lady's case, I'd say it's true. At one point I switched my shutter speed to 6 frames a second to capture an eyes-open-shot; we had lots of great shots in the end but I'd like to share a collection of blinks from Morgan's photo shoot and a sample of one 'keeper'.

Outtakes - The Strut

Strutting his stuff. I gave no instruction except to walk comfortably and as you'd like. He made it his own and started to show his moves which looked a little like a strut and dance mixed into one. I'm not sure if he's going to grow up to be an entertainer or if he was just trying to keep the mosquitos from landing. It was sweet to see him glancing up at his mom to see if he was making her laugh.

These behind the scenes images brought tears to his mother's eyes. As a mother you want your children to be happy. As your photographer, I want your children to be happy too. Following a shoot I often go through the images and wonder what happened at particular moments to evoke certain looks and smiles. Did I say something funny? I don’t consider myself funny so it must have just been silliness. I do remember this moment though, maybe because it lasted for quite a while, this boy had the giggle-fits and he couldn’t stop laughing. His giggle was infectious.

This family wanted to do something a little different for their annual family photo shoot so we took it to the city. We scooted, climbed ramps, enjoyed the city skyline and above all else, the family loved each other, shared sideways glances, knowing looks, encouraging smiles and giggles. It's possible that not everyone wanted to be there but at the end of the day they have a story to tell and images to remind them "about that time...."

You can picture the setting - you are at a family gathering and maybe turning the pages of one of your family photo albums and your sister/brother laughs and says "Remember that time mom brought us to that parkade ..."

Road Trip!

I'll call it a road trip even though it's not far from home. I believe it classifies as a road trip if I’ve got hot coffee and a place to be. Some days it’s an opportunity to be quiet and alone with my thoughts and other days I turn up the volume and get lost in the beat of a good song. Today was a beautiful day to drive into the country for a photo shoot; the contrast of the yellow canola against blue sky was too beautiful not to make me grateful for my surroundings. Enjoy your road trip and take time to admire the beauty around you - tag me on your road trip.

Two Thumbs Up

We started Morgan's shoot early because storm clouds were heading in our direction. Both Morgan and her horse, Orlagh, were ready to get started as the primping started early in the day. Hair, nails and even Orlagh got some special beauty time.

We were able to shoot for the must-have shots before it started raining. Thankfully we made it inside the barn before the skies opened up but Orlagh had to be walked back to the pasture - thanks mom! Mom was soaked through but didn't let it get her down; she wrapped herself in a blanket and enjoyed the loudest thunderstorm I've heard in years while being protected from the wind and rain inside the beautiful old red barn. I took advantage of the light entering the barn to capture more images of Morgan and when the storm passed we headed back out to continue the photo shoot in the fresh after-storm air. The rain and evening light made everything shine a little more brightly.

It was a pleasure to work with Morgan and her mom on this meaningful photo shoot. Some images from this shoot can be viewed on the collage page of my website and more will be posted soon.

The first image below was taken after Morgan's photo shoot - she had a great time and so did I. The second image is of Morgan rocking her photo shoot.

This birthday girl wanted a Juniper Berry Photography session for her special birthday *so flattered

She learned that a photo shoot is more than just looking great. When she became a Juniper Berry model she got to see what happens behind the scenes. Light testing, working up a sweat walking her horses in snow and trying to keep warm between shots.

The cold toes get warm and the red cheeks fade but the images are going to be recorded in a photo album forever.

It was a pleasure hanging out with you and your horses for the afternoon Erin. Also, let's not forget to thank your mom for being a great assistant and managing the second horse and warm clothes behind the scenes.

I'm excited to share some sample shots from one proud Bobcat’s shoot that took place on Thursday. She is definitely magazine-cover-worthy! The athletes were excited to choose a pose of their own; it was interesting to see which one they picked for themselves. I'm thankful to my sister who volunteered her time to assist me on this shoot - we worked hard but it was fun. Remembering each individual personally while I edited the images had me smiling the whole way through.

Why a winter photo shoot is great

1. Frost

Hoar Frost is beautifully picturesque and once you add your gorgeous self we create custom art you will be proud to display in your home. Hoar Frost is common at the beginning of winter buy can be seen throughout the season. I hope these whimsical crystals can play a part in your photo shoot.

2. Grey skies equal beautiful skin

No joke – photographers use light to keep you looking beautiful and in the winter there are so many days with beautiful soft light. Cloudy days may not seem ideal but they will smooth your skin and help you look your best.

3. Winter wardrobe

Do you secretly prefer your winter wardrobe to your summer wardrobe? The boots, jackets, cozy scarves and textured knits! You are getting excited imagining it, right? I’m thinking of the layering combinations and my heart is racing. If you need any advice or ideas on what to wear I’m here to help.

4. Winter sun

As mentioned above, the winter sun is much more flattering than the high, specular sun of summer. It’s fabulous because it stays relatively low in the sky and nature’s natural filters make it beautiful before it lights you. If you want to glow, consider a winter shoot.

5. Sunset & sunrise

It gets better and better. Sunset and sunrise are the best times of day to shoot. In summer, this means getting up at silly-o’clock or getting home long after dinnertime but in winter, you will be home in time for dinner and to cosy up with your loved ones on the sofa.

6. Winter makes you the focus

You’re not just a prop in all of the autumn colours. The wintery background makes sure the focus in on you and you’re going to look great! I love burgundy. and navy blue can be beautiful too. Whatever colours you decide to wear, you will shine. If you prefer a more muted neutral look - perfect – wear neutral colours and the background will play along. Winter backdrops are starting to sound amazing, right!?

7. Snow

Lots of people hope for snow when booking a winter photo shoot. I’ve got my snow pants, warm boots and down jacket ready to walk through deep snow for you. I’ll be prepared to record your memories in the snow so you can capture the beauty of this season before it melts.

This morning I was lucky to be shooting in -6 degrees Celsius! Much warmer than the -23 degree weather we've been having! I wore three layers of clothes but as it turns out, photographing a beautiful girl, two horses and a dog on 80 acres of property kept me warm enough that the second layer was probably unnecessary. Better safe than sorry. My sister's homemade muffin made a nice snack and the hot water in my thermos kept me hydrated while we traipsed over the hills. A fantastic day to take in the scenery and fresh air. Images from the shoot will shared here - watch this space.

I spent my birthday horseback riding with family. The fact that my allergies flared up and that I was tenting in freezing temperatures didn’t take away from how lucky I felt to be spending time in nature with my family. The fire and the hugs were warm – not to mention my sister camps in a trailer with heat so the occasional break to help clean up after meals was nice too Birthdays - another time of the year that reminds us time is passing and we change with it whether we want to or not. Collect memories, not things.

Cheeky Smiles

They try to look mature, and grown-up boys don’t smile right? They give it their best shot but mention their girlfriend’s name and they can’t help themselves. The positive side effect is the lovely blush it puts in their cheeks . It’s even sweeter when they beam in response to questions about their mom. It’s always special when I’m invited to capture these fleeting moments that nature only lets us enjoy for a short time.

Find the light, find the background, dial in the settings to the camera, coach the girl, fix her hair, coach the girl again and oh, now a friendly dog is nudging the camera away from my face with it’s nose and licking my eye. Thankfully, in this case, the horse was on his best behaviour. Getting the shot isn’t easy or straightforward but it’s always worth it!

The ABRA Finals was fun, exciting and sometimes scary. It was special to share the experience with my sister and niece. Camping onsite, I was able to shadow them and see some of the effort that Barrel Racers put into preparing for their final runs of the season. After the hard work, these Barrel Racers deserve to take some time out to pamper themselves. I hope you had a great time at the ABRA Finals!

Coffee Please

Those of you who know me, or know me through my About Me page, know I love coffee. I will go so far as saying I need coffee. My morning coffee not only combats caffeine-withdrawal headaches but it's also my morning ritual and it fills me with joy. So needless to say, once I arrived back to Alberta, I needed to find some good beans. While I waited for my morning latte I snapped a picture of Barry familiarizing himself on Edmonton news (being new to the area is still a novelty). I'm still looking for a great coffee place to source some beans so I’d love to know where you recommend - please let me know in the comments.

Packed for a Journey Across the Ocean

I nervously prepared all my photo equipment for shipment across the Ocean for my return to Canada. A lot of bright yellow ‘Fragile tape’ was used! I was sad to pack away my favourite lens but had to limit the weight in my backpack for our travels to Hong Kong and Vietnam. Today I got to open it up and get excited to use it for my new Canadian business. I hope to shoot you with my 85mm soon

I get really enthusiastic when I am collaborating with fellow women entrepreneurs. Yvonne and I had so much fun making images; from her with her tools of the trade, genuine portraits and amusing images relating to blog post themes. The studio was brimming with clothes, shoes, accessories, props, make-up and laughter. We danced, jumped, twisted, played peekaboo, pretended to be angry, acted frustrated and even stood very, very still. I have no doubt that someone as passionate about her gift as Yvonne will be successful and I sincerely wish her the best. Watch this space and I will let you know when she launches her site!
